Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, yesterday came under heavy attack as his kinsmen called for his sack over his attack on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremdau.
Osita, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had, on Sunday, slammed Ekweremadu over his comments on President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of the country’s economy.
He had said the deputy Senate President who allegedly diverted the money meant for Enugu-Port Harcourt major highway to his village road, did not have the right to query President Muhammadu Buhari for borrowing interest free interest Suku N100 billion loan to fix Enugu-Port Harcourt, Enugu-Onitsha major highways and similar highways projects across the federation
But the Enugu West Peoples Forum in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by its National President, Hon. Paul Anikwe, said Osita’s penchant for attacking Ekweremadu “because he has no work to do at VON” and called on the President to relieve him of his appointment.
The statement read in part: “But Mr. Okechukwu’s rating is not surprising, especially coming from a self-appointed attack dog on Senator Ekweremadu and Igbo interest in order to curry favour from the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, but to no avail. We wonder when he became the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress or the Presidency to respond on Ekweremadu’s warning on Nigeria’s rising debt profile.
“Atiku Abubakar, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Governor Ayo Fayose, all criticised the Federal Government (FG) at the PDP convention, but Osita couldn’t mention any of their names, except that of his kinsman. He mentioned rail projects being financed by foreign loans, but it did not matter to him that the Eastern Railway Corridor, which is strategic to the East and South South were deliberately excluded.
“Unfortunately, for him, all he has to show for his efforts is the Director-Generalship of a moribund government media house, which nobody listens to. He was never considered fit for Minister of Information, DG of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) or Board member of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
“We, therefore, call in the federal government to relieve him of his appointment for ignorance, incompetence, redundancy.”
