Kogi flood: 4, 000 victims get Melaye’s relief materials

Over 4,000 flood victims in Lokoja and Kogi local government areas have benefitted from relief materials worth over  N10 million distributed by the Senator  Dino Melaye Foundation to cushion the effects of this year’s flood disaster in Kogi state .

Speaking during the distribution of the items which included bags of rice, blankets and cloths at the palace of the Ohimege Igu  in Koton-Karfe, Senator Melaye said the relief materials were meant to cushion the effects of the flood on the victims.

He attributed the plights of victims of the 2020 flood disaster in the state to the failure of government to put in place measures to mitigate the annual flooding of the Rivers Niger and Benue.

Melaye, who represented Kogi West Senatorial District in the 8th Senate, said with or without political appointment he would continue to lend his support to the vulnerable and the less privileged.

“As a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party believed in meeting the needs of the people. The flood that ravaged the areas this year is unfortunate and it behoves on well- meaning citizens to come to the aid of victims,” he said.

Melaye, who described flood as “a natural occurrence,” said with proactive measures in place, the plights of the people usually affected by the disaster would have been mitigated and losses would be minimised.

He said the gesture was borne out of his affection for the people whether in or out of office and promised to continue to give a helping hands to the people.

“This gesture which cuts across the two local government areas in Kogi West has no political colouration, but out of love and compassion for the people devastated by flood.”
