Kogi FRSC worries over rise in road accidents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has expressed worry over the sudden rise in the number of deaths recorded in accidents which occurred on Lokoja-Abuja road in 2013.

Zonal Commander of the Corps in charge of Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states, Mr Dennis Terrang, who stated this yesterday in Lokoja, said the trend must stop, this year.

Terrang said he was in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital, to rub minds with top officials of the state sector command on how to achieve the 2014 set target of reducing road accidents  by 25 per cent and fatality by 15 per cent.
He stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together “so as to minimise death associated with road crashes.”

He said the Corps intended to look into the possibility of deploying more men and equipment to the state command for effective patrol of roads, and charged officers to be more focus and diligent while on duty.
In his remarks, the state Sector Commander, Mr Godwin Omiko, attributed the incessant road accidents to over speeding due to the better condition of Lokoja-Abuja-Okene road.

Omiko  assured  that the Command would rise up to the challenge by scaling up patrol activities and ensuring effective deployment of equipment, adding that  officials of the agency would be deployed to strategic points of the roads to calm down speed.
He also identified drunk driving as a major problem amongst motorists plying the Abuja-Lokojha-Okene road, saying that the Corps would severely deal with drivers that engaged “in this habit.”
