The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr Ado Ibrahim has called on well meaning Ebira people and corporate organisations in Kogi to invest in sports in order to discover new talents and reduce youth restiveness in the state.
The royal father, who made the call at the weekend during the grand finale of the 2017 edition of Ajanah Basketball Inter Local Government championship held in Okene, Kogi state, described sports as a veritable tool that could easily foster unity and peace among the diverse entities in the society.
Ibrahim, while calling on individuals and corporate organisations in the state to emulate Justice Nasiru Ajanah, who has been promoting the game of basketball in the last over 10 years among the local government areas of the state, said government alone could not provide all the needs of the citizens and appealed to well meaning Kogi indigenes to contribute their quota towards sports development.
“My hope of Ebiraland becoming a sport loving society has started materialising through the effort and commitment of Justice Nasiru Ajanah, the Chief Judge of Kogi state
“This effort has also started bringing unity and tolerance to the land. You can see how the participants from the local government areas of the state were embracing themselves through sportsmanship, this is exactly what we expect to happen in our domain as traditional rulers, who are closer to the people at the grassroots.”
In his remarks, Speaker of Kogi state Assembly, Rt Hon. Matthew Kolawole, said sports should not be left in the hand of government alone, saying there should be partnership through individual contributions to encourage and develop the sector in the state.
