The Lagos state Police Command has said the Police team involved in the shooting to death of Kolade Johnson have been arrested and are in Police custody.
A video had gone viral on the internet following the shooting and killing of a young man identified as Kolade Johnson by a team of Policemen in Lagos.
The incident was said to have occurred at Onipetesi Area of Agege, Lagos on Sunday afternoon.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of Lagos state, CP Zubairu Muazu, made this known in a press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, DSP Bala Elkana, Monday.
It read in part: “On March 31, 2019, at about 5.05pm, the Command received a distress call that Lagos- Abeokuta Express Way has been blocked by some angry youths, who were protesting the shooting of one Kolade Johnson, m, of No.1 Beco Street, Onipetesi, Mangoro Bus Stop by a team of Policemen from Anti Cultism Unit.
“A team of policemen from the Rapid Response Squads and Metro Patrol Unit were promptly drafted to the scene. The account of eye witnesses helped in identifying the team which fled the scene immediately after the incident. “Members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting have since been arrested and are currently in Police custody undergoing interrogation.”
The statement said the policemen would be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, and may be prosecuted in conventional court if implicated in the on-going investigation.
Meanwhile, the Police boss has called for calm assuring that justice would prevail in the case. The CP also condoled with family, friends and well wishers of the deceased.
The spokesperson said the CP also promised to initiate far reaching reforms to help in repositioning the Anti Cultism Squad for effective service delivery, particularly in areas of respect for Human Rights and proficiency in the use of firearms.
