Konshisha invasion: IDPs sleeping in the open, without food – Report

Report by Jireh Doo Foundation (JDF), a nongovernmental organisation, Sunday stated that 1,471 persons were displaced following the military invasion of Konshisha local government area  of Benue state.


Jireh Doo also said among the displaced persons at the three Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps profiled in the area were 60 nursing mothers, 19 pregnant women and 810 children.
The report which was compiled by Viashima Linus and Ojile Marvin for the foundation and made available to journalists in Makurdi also stated that most of the IDPs as a result of the attack were forced to sleep outside their homes without food and basic amenities like water and shelter.


The report of the needs assessment analysis, according to JDF, was conducted at the three IDP camps located at Aku, Gungul and Gungul Main.
The Report said JDF visited the scene where great damage was done at Aku and Gungul, Konshisha LGA from 16th – 18th April, 2021.
The report also noted that the attack led to loss of food items, seedlings, sleeping materials, clothes, economic trees, utensils, cars, motorcycles, shops and nearly all kinds of valuables and houses were completely burnt down, rendering most victims of the attacks completely unable to get back to their livelihood.


“Assessment and registration was conducted at Aku community, and two camps in Gungul main town. A total of 1,471 IDPs were enrolled out of which 810 were children.


“In all, a total of 412 IDPs were registered at Aku community with 12 pregnant women, 20 nursing mother and 181 children.
“After registration (at Gungul), a total of 265 IDPs were reached, with 3 pregnant women, 15 nursing mothers and 153 children.
“For Gungul Main town, a total of 794 IDPs were registered, with 4 pregnant women, 22 nursing mothers and 423 children.”
The Foundation observed that based on its needs assessment the IDPs would need some basic things that make life conducive for living.
