The Chairman, Kuje area council, Alhaji Abdullahi Danladi Galadima, has appealed to residents of the council, especially unemployed women and youths to take advantage of the free skills acquisition opportunity created by the Council and learn some skills to empower themselves and improve their families.
Galadima said “unemployment, idleness and poverty have been traced as primary causes of insecurity in parts of the country,” and stressed the determination of the Council to empower its women and youths population, especially by engaging in relevant skills.
The chairman, who made these remarks while declaring open the Council’s skills acquisition Training Programme at the Kuje Women Development Centre yesterday, said poverty and unemployment among women and youths had become major hindrance to national development.
He said the current security challenges confronting the nation were traced to the high incidence of unemployment and poverty and that the Council would do everything within its powers to arrest the ugly trend in the Council.
“In order to arrest the ugly trend of unemployment and poverty we must look for various ways of providing development both educationally, socially and economically to eliminate extreme poverty, hunger and idleness that promote crime in the society,” he said.
Galadima described entrepreneurship as “the bedrock of economic development,” saying innovations and talents must be exploited for the development of the society.
A resource person, Professor Katuka Yaki in an address titled: “Modern Techniques on Skills Acquisition,” appealed to the area council to assist participants with soft loans to enable them establish small-scale businesses after the training.
He said the participants would require such assistance to enable them produce materials to supply to the public through the open markets and super-markets springing up in the area council.
Participants were required to choose any line of skills ranging from cosmetology, bag and shoe making, fashion designing, hair dressing, catering and information technology training.
Head of department (HOD), Education and Social Development, Kuje area council, Mrs. Ramat M. Gojara, on her part, thanked the council chairman for the initiative and urged the participant to utilise what they learn from the programme.
