Kuje residents advocate enforcement of sanitation laws

Residents of Kuje area council have urged the Council to begin strict enforcement of environmental laws to achieve the desired cleanliness in the area.
Some of the residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kuje, said monthly environmental sanitation launched by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recently was a welcome development.

They said the Council should follow-up with sensitisation programmes, to increase the residents’ awareness on the issue.
Mrs. Modupe Jile attributed the sanitation challenge in Kuje to the failure of the area council to enforce environmental laws.
She said the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation in the area councils by the minister was a step in the right direction.

Jile called for regular monitoring by officials of the FCT Administration.
“I think the most important thing to do to achieve the desired cleanliness in Kuje is for the council to embark on aggressive sensitisation,” she said.
Another resident, Mrs. Patience Aghedo, blamed the dirtiness in the area on the failure by the area council to regularly evacuate refuse dumps.
Aghedo commended residents for their efforts in ensuring that refuse from their homes were gathered at various points.

“It is good that the minister is starting on a good note because we have seen situations in Kuje where refuse dump will almost cover the entire road without evacuation.
“The issue of evacuation is supposed to be a daily affair since the council cannot afford many vans for the exercise,” she said.
Another respondent, Mr. Onifade Adeyemi, called for renewed efforts to support the council and the FCT administration to ensure a clean environment in Kuje.
