Kwara: EFCC recovers N100m, secures 26 convictions in ‘clean up’ operations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Wednesday said it has recovered the sum of N100 million cash from various individuals in its ongoing ‘clean up’ operations in Kwara state.

The commission’s Zonal Head in charge of Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti State,ACP Isyaku Sharu, disclosed this in Ilorin while delivering the 26th edition of media parliament lecture series of the Kwara state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists( NUJ ) held at the NUJ press centre Ilorin .

The theme for the lecture was”  Anti-Corruption Fight in Nigeria, Progress and Challenges : The Kwara State Experience”

The EFCC zonal head  said by the “end of this month when the court resumes, those found culpable would be changed to court”

He regretted that most of those aiding  corrupt practices in the state were civil servants not more than grade level 14.

“As at last week we have recovered N100 million cash for the state government “,he said .

He also said the commission has never lost a case in court since it assumed operations in the state  in February 2019   with a mandate to ‘:clean up’ the mess in the state.

The zonal head said the commission has secured conviction of 26 persons some of which he said  were youths  within the age bracket of  18 -25 involved in internet fraud.

Sharu said part of the challenges initially faced by the commission was that people were reluctant to give information for fair that their lives might be in danger.

Also speaking, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kwara state, Attahiru Garba Madami, blamed rising cases of crimes, especially among the youth on breakdown of family value.

He said, “We no longer practice our family value system which abhors bad behavior and bad name.”

He spoke of the need for Nigerians to eradicate corruption from the country, saying, “if we don’t kill corruption, it will kill us.”
