Kwara gov’s wife screens 3,500 women for cancer

Leah Charity Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), owned by wife of the Kwara state governor, has so far screened over 3,500 women for cervical and breast cancers in the state, its founding Trustee, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, said yesterday.
Mrs. Ahmed who addressed a press conference to commemorate the 2014 world cancer day at the newly established Leah cancer centre located in GRA, Ilorin, said 240 of the screened women were discovered to have lumps on their breasts.
“We have 30 established cases of full blow breast cancer, five cases of cervical cancers that had gone beyond redemption and we have a lot that have been referred for further investigation.
The first lady said the women were screened at the foundation’s mini centres opened at Adewole Cottage hospital, Sobi specialist hospital, Centre, Igboro, and the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), prior to the establishment of the foundation private centre.
She said: “Once a woman does the VIA test and she discovers she has the symptoms, we have a therapy we offer at this centre that is called the cryotherapy, once they come for it, that nips it in the bud so that it doesn’t go beyond that level and that vaccine is free. All she needs to do is to make sure she is coming for regular check-up. We have had several of it done at our centre; we have over 60 women referred for lumps to be removed from their breast.”
