Kwara guber race: Concerned APC members, elders disagree on primaries

With less than 48 hours to the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Kwara state, there is confusion amongst major stakeholders on which mode of voting should be adopted during Saturday’s primaries.
While some elders of the party have advocated direct primaries, a group known as Concerned APC Foundation members insisted that they neither want direct nor indirect primaries.
Instead, they said they preferred a zoning and consensus arrangement.
The national secretariat of the APC had released guidelines and mode of primaries to be adopted by each state in which it approved direct primaries for kwara.
But a group within the party known as Concerned APC foundation members on Thursday, kicked against the mode approved for the state ,saying it would allowed the ‘‘moles’’ who have infiltrated the party to have their way.
The spokesman of the group Hon.
Saheed Popoola representing Balogun/ Ojomu Constituency at the state House of Assembly presented the group position in a letter of request handed over to the party’s deputy chairman in the state, Alhaji Samari Abdullahi at the party secretariat yesterday.
He alleged that the leader of its rival party in the state had secured nomination form to the tune of N300 million for some pole who have been sponsored to act as moles within the APC at all levels.
Popoola said if indirect primaries was adopted, the money bags ‘‘will push cash through his cronies’’ to influence the emergence of an unpopular candidates during the party’s primaries.
Popoola also alleged that the party was some people imported from Osun and Oyo states to participate during the APC’s recent registration exercise in the state during which he said membership forms were also duplicated.
‘‘However direct primary would have been a better option but we have evidence that some imported elements from Osun, Oyo and other neighbouring states participated in just concluded registration exercise in Kwara State.
And we are also investigating how our membership forms were duplicated in some places” “We believe it will be fair and just if the foundation APC members are allowed to pick the governorship ticket and give deputy governor ticket to the PDP that joined the party recently.
“Meanwhile it is politically expedient and morally correct too, to allow the North Senatorial district have a shot at the number one seat in the state.
They should be allowed to produce the governor of Kwara State in 2019 and our party should give them chance as a progressive platform”, the statement said
