Lack of professional economists an issue in Nigeria – NES

The President of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), Professor Tamunopriye Agiobenebo has attributed the lack of professional economists in the economic management team of Nigeria as an issue that needs to be addressed, for the purpose of policy formulation and implementation.

The president while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday ahead of the 60th NES conference scheduled to hold in September said an economic management team without an economist can’t move the country forward in terms of economic growth and development .

Agiobenebo was represented by member of the Local Organising Committee, Prof Sarah Anyanwu said the country needs to have an economic team to direct the affairs of this country in terms of economic development and economic growth.

She assured that there should a ministry of planning which is suppose to have an professional economist as the minister but the doesn’t have.

“Ours is to try. We are not given that recognition to move the economy forward. We are somehow handicapped because we don’t have our members in the economic management team.

“But, we are  happy that the Vice President  is going to be around for the conference so that he would listen to our challenges,”she said.
