Lafia residents want Sule to intervene on erosion threat

Residents of Ungwar Galadima community in Lafia local government area of Nasarawa state Thursday appealed to Governor Abdullahi Sule to save them from the seasonal nightmare of gully erosion.i

Leader of the community, Galadiman Lafia, Alhaji Mohammed Jibrin made the appeal in Lafia. He described the level of erosion devastation on his people as worrisome.

Galadima said the menacing expansion of the gully had taken over 15 percent of the size of their lands located in the ancient city of Lafia and called for government’s intervention as a matter of urgency.

“My people suffer the worst impact of the menace every rainy season. This was as a result of the abandoned drainage system embarked upon and all water channels in the Lafia metropolitan runs to the Amba River, constituting a serious water lodge around our houses in Ungwar Galadima. Please, Governor Sule, intervene,” he said.

He added that the menace has become a fast expanding gully erosion site which affects up to 30 residential homes and subjected to excessive degradation from rampaging gullies.

Galadiman stated that both government agencies and politicians had been going to see the level of damage caused by the erosion in the area, but that nothing has been done up to this moment.

“I wish Governor Sule could hear me. I am very optimistic that once he hears this, he will take his time to come over and see things for himself. I have confidence that he can complete this abandoned drainage project that has caused serious fear in us.”
