Lagos Assembly considers reform bill on transport

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have proposed action on the transformation in the transport sector.
The members made the resolve during the second reading on “A bill for a law to consolidate all laws relating to the transport sector, provide for the development and management of a sustainable transport system in Lagos State and for connected purpose”.
Acting Chairman, Committee on Transportation, Fatai Mojeed, who read out the advantages of the bill, said if passed it would ease traffic congestion and harmonise all laws relating to the transport sector in the state.
He also added that one of the things that can make a nation to be reckoned with globally is to make effective transportation policies, took exemption to parts of the bill that talks about the control of motorcycles and tricycles.
Contributing, Tunde Braimoh, said the bill is germane because transportation is a very important sector of living and said that section 18 sub-section 3, which talks about duty of the vehicle inspection needs to exempt government from natural disaster.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, later constituted 7-man Adhoc Committee to work on the bill to ensure accountability and transparency in the new provision of the bill. It is expected to submit the report in a month’s time.
The Committee is headed by Hon. Fatai Mojeed, Acting Chairman Committee on Transportation. Other members include; Hon. Moshood Oshun, Hon. Olawale Abdul-Sobur, Hon. Desmond Elliot, Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara, Hon. Dayo Famakinwa and Hon. Ibrahim Layode.
