Lagos pilgrims fulfill rite at Jamarat


At the dawn of the 10th day of Dhul Hijah, the third day of the five days earmarked for major Hajj rites, hundreds of thousands of Hajj pilgrims walked together to Jamarat Al-Aqaba in Mina.

It is at this site the Lagos pilgrims joined the rest rest of the word to throw seven pebbles at a wall in a ritual that symbolizes the stoning of the devil.

Security at the site are managing the flow of the more than 2 million pilgrims, to ensure that congestion is kept at a minimum level.

It would be recalled that in 2015, hundreds of pilgrims died in a stampede at Mina, it was the deadliest incident to occur in the last 25 years of the holy pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Since then, the authorities have taken measures to ensure safe flow through Jamarat Al-Aqaba and onto the Jamarat Bridge where the ritual takes place.

The Hajj, apart from being an obligatory spiritual journey for Muslims around the world, for many it is also a time to connect with loved ones.

Meanwhile, Pilgrims at this year Hajj have been advised to take extreme care at the Jamarat as this ritual can get very crowded and emotionally charged.

The Chairman, Ad-hoc Committee on Hajj, Alhaji Ahmed Jebe, gave this advice on Sunday in an interview with media representatives at the Lagos Tent in Minna.

According to Alhaji Jebe, “Due to the crowds, it is advisable to perform the exercise in the evening, due to the surge of pilgrims who rush to perform the rite before midday.” 

Contributing, the Chairman Alausa Central Mosque, Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi, urged pilgrims to stay hydrated by taking a lot of water during this walk and use an umbrella to protect themself from the sun. 

The Executive Secretary, Mr. Ishola Rahman, wished Muslim faithful all over the world Ed -ul Mubarak and enjoined them to celebrate the festival in grand style.
