Lasa Fever: Osun confirms 2 cases at OAUTH

Osun state government has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever discovered in the state, assuring that things are in order.

Speaking at a press conference jointly addressed by the Commissioner for Health and Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu and Pharmacist Siji Olamiju, said the duo of the victims are responding to treatment.

The two cases, according to the government, were discovered at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, OAUTH, Ile-Ife.

Meanwhile, the government debunked the rumour that one of the victims sneaked out of where she was kept at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital.

On the one discovered at Wesley Guild, Ilesa, Olamiju said no case was recorded in Ilesa, advising health workers to obey proper means of communication in the health sector so as to avoid unnecessary panic.

They urged members of the public to be careful of uncooked food, which, according to them, usually prone to rat.

They also called on members of the public to ensure that rats are not moving close to their food.

“We have been going to worshipping centres and market to educate our people. We believe that those that are aware will spread the message to their households and the awareness will continue.

“The State government is interested in the health of every citizen. We are talking to people in the local language and in a manner that they can understand so that we can prevent Lassa fever rather than waiting to treat people when infected.

“We have put in place all the protective measures and we have sensitized all our epidemiological antennas across the State to capture any case from spreading if discovered in any part of the state.

“It is expedient for people not to allow their food items to be contaminated with rodent urine or faeces”.
