‘LASG to prosecute anyone caught spreading Coronavirus rumour’


Lagos state government has warned residents against spreading Coronavirus rumour saying anyone caught in the act will face criminal charges and prosecution.

State commissioner for health, Professor Akin Abayomi, gave the warning when he received the Health Minister. Dr Osagie Enahire on an inspection visit to the Biosafety Bank and facilities at State Mainland Hospital which is the Lagos State Infectious Disease Hospital.

Abayomi who debunked claims that some Chinese living on Osoba Close in the Gowon Estate, Ipaja, Alimosho local government were suspected to have the virus, describe the wild Coronavirus rumour as “fake news”.

He said, “We heard the same Coronavirus rumour and we deployed our biosecurity team there. They have gathered a lot of medical and community intelligence so far and it appears to us that there is no such thing and that it was fake news.”

Ministry of Health Surveillance and Biosecurity unit visited Gowon Estate,  Saturday and Sunday following rumour of suspected cases of Coronavirus and residence of Chinese descent in the estate.

Team led by Medical Officers of Health (Alimosho and Mosan Okunola LCDA), Dr. Odufuwa and Dr Oni respectively also had representatives of the Community Development Committee in search of the said Osoba close but found neither such street or close in the estate.

The team reported also that they did not find any Chinese leaving on the estate noting that it used all available surveillance methods including ward focal, councillors, bike riders, market women, bar tenders, Google maps among others.
