Lassa fever: 2 dead, 7 cases recorded as Gombe takes measures to curtail outbreak


Gombe state commissioner of health Dr Ahmad Gana has said Lassa fever has already killed two people in the state.
Dr Gana who disclosed while briefing journalists in Gombe said the two persons were killed out of the seven suspected cases recorded.


He said among the two dead, one had been confirmed to be Lassa fever while the confirmation to what may have caused the death of the other was still being awaited.
The commissioner, however, said the second confirmed case of Lassa fever brought in from Ibbi Local government area of Taraba State has been treated and discharged from the isolation centre of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. 


“I can tell you that the confirmed Lassa Fever fatality was brought in from Bayo local government area of Borno state while the unconfirmed fatality was a resident of Gombe state. 
Dr Ahmed Gana said at the moment, the four suspected Lassa fever cases are undergoing treatment at the isolation centre.


He said Governor Inuwa Yahaya, has approved the procurement of additional commodities for effective prevention and management of the outbreak in the state, including free treatment and feeding of confirmed cases on admission.


While calling on the people of the state to embrace the spirit of personal and environmental hygiene, the commissioner said all emergency units of the ministry have been re-activated to respond to reported cases anywhere in the state.
