Lassa fever: Adamawa govt takes steps to stop spread

Disturbed by the reported cases of Lassa fever in the state, Adamawa state government, has taken urgent steps to curtail the spread of the disease in Adamawa. Addressing journalists yesterday in Yola, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Fati Atiku Abubakar, said the state government was seriously disturbed with the situation but assured that, the situation will be brought under control in the shortest possible time. Atiku further explained the measures taken by the ministry and by extension the state government to includes contact tracing through identification, line listing and follow up of contacts for 21 days from day of last contact with patient. Others are procurement and supplies of more drugs and PPEs, emergency operation centre for management of response activities on daily basis, re- orientation of health facility staff on infection, prevention and control practices and case management as well as state wide public enlightenment campaign and media engagement through discussions, jingles and sport announcement. She further advised the general public to immediately report suspected cases to the nearest health facility to them or call the state emergency operation centre and keep their homes and surroundings clean to avoid contact with rats among other precautionary measures.
