Lawlessness threatens security – Police

In order to reduce crime in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abubakar Bello, has called on residents not to take law into their hands, warning that “whoever is found wanting will face the music of the law.”
The commissioner, who gave the warning yesterday at a security meeting with stakeholders in Kuje, said his visit to Kuje was as a result of his concern about the security situation in the area.
The police boss urged the people of Kuje area council and FCT in particular to always assist the police with vital information.
The police boss added that although the constitutional responsibility of maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety rests on the shoulders of Nigeria police, but every citizen has a civic responsibility to assist the police in terms of security matter.
Bello appealed to FCT residents to assist the police with valuable information as, according to him, there is no way the police can win the war against crime without the cooperation of the people, pointing out that “this is necessary because these people live among us.”
He assured FCT residents of their safety as the identity of those that help the police with useful information will not be revealed, assuring that no stone would be left unturned in the command bid to stem violent crimes in the Territory.
In his welcome remarks, the chairman, Kuje area council, Alhaji Abdullahi Danladi Galadima, declared Kuje as the most peaceful area council in the FCT.
He expressed happiness for the visit and thanked the police commissioner for choosing Kuje area council as his first point of visit.
Galadima appealed to the people of Kuje to continue to live up and justified this good record of theirs, and enjoined the residents not to take laws into their hands, but to report any incident to the police or other sister law enforcement agent for further necessary action.
The chairman assured the police commissioner of his administration’s readiness to partner with him in the area of crime prevention.
On his part, the Gomo of Kuje, HRH Alhaji Haruna Tanko Jibrin, charged traditional rulers to be security conscious and maintain peace in their various domains in order to foster unity and development.
He said the giant strides made by the government to adequately equip the police to make it live up to its statutory obligation and to fight crime in the country is commendable.
The monarch added that despite government’s efforts, it was unfortunate that men of the underworld were better armed than the police.
He, therefore, appealed to the commissioner to provide Kuje with an additional police post and adequate personnel for security in the area.
