Lawmaker laments poor condition of govt schools in Ebonyi

The member representing Afikpo North/South Federal Constituency, Ebonyi state,  Iduma  Igariwey has expressed displeasure over poor conditions of public  schools in  the state.

 He expressed pain on the way government abandoned public schools in the  state especially those in his constituency to decay to  unimaginable levels.

Igariwey made staed this at Enohia Itim, Afikpo North local government area of the when he flagged off the distribution of educational materials to some schools in his constituency.

 He  lamented that public schools that were very important in driving socio-economic, political and religious wellbeing of the society, have become so neglected that many former patrons of the sector now resort  to private schools that are not affordable.

“In some of these state schools, there are no desks for the pupils and their teachers. In some cases, school pupils either sit on bare floors, cement or mud blocks or other improvised platforms that are scandalously unsuitable for academic activity.

“Majority of the buildings in these state schools are in total states of disrepair.  Roofs and ceilings of these schools are in such messy and dangerous conditions”, he said.

He said that he will continue to do his best to better the lots of his constituents in the education sector, adding that he had already rolled out plan to provide some good quantities of decent pieces of furniture to five schools in his constituency.

The Lawmaker assured that the  furniture would be  delivered to the schools  before the end of  this month and urged the communities that will benefit from the gesture to protect the furniture  for prolonged use.

He further stated that he is deploying concrete pavement to construct internal roads within Government Secondary School, Owutu Edda, and will also rebuild the school’s Refectory/Assembly Hall which collapsed many years ago.

Igariwey who built a block of classrooms at Ejikewu Primary School in Edda, Afikpo  South LGA, also supplied Science Laboratory equipment/materials to many  secondary schools in the Constituency.

He  assured that more  interventions in the education sector were in the pipeline  to better the lives of both students and teachers in his constituency to make  education hub in the area more attractive.
