Lawmaker urges NASS leadership to put national interest above partisanship

Nsukka West constituency representative in the Enugu state House of Assembly Dr Emma Ugwuerua has advised the new leadership of the National Assembly (NASS) to put national interest above partisan consideration.

Ugwuerua gave the advice Wednesday in Nsukka while reacting to Monday’s election of new principal officers of the ninth NASS.
He specifically urged the new leadership to carry every member of the NASS along, irrespective of their political, religious and tribal backgrounds.

“Nigerians are happy with the free and fair process of the election of the principal officers of NASS on Tuesday.
“The Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, should carry every lawmaker along.
“If every member is given a sense of belonging, there will be peace, unity and stability in the ninth assembly.

“This will help to promote harmonious working relationship among the legislators across the different political divides and ensure quality performance.”
Ugwuerua expressed concern that the South-east geo-political zone was not considered for any principal position in the current NASS by the ruling-All Progessives Congress (APC).

“It’s unfair that South-East was schemed out from NASS plum leadership positions, while the South-west, which produced the vice president, also produced the speaker of the House of Representatives,” he said.
Also, the chairman of APC in Nsukka local government area Mr Joseph Ugwuoke expressed happiness over the maturity and transparency that characterised the election of the NASS leadership.

Ugwuoke said that the credible, free and fair election of the NASS principal officers was an indication that Nigeria would move to the next level during President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure.
“With the calibre of lawmakers elected as principal officers, it is expected that there will be a cordial and robust relationship between the executive and legislature.
“I urge the new leadership to carry every member along because they will not succeed without the cooperation of other members, he said.(NAN)
