Leave Calabar within 7 days, group orders Eze Ndigbo

A group, Nka Ikemesit Mkparawa Essien Efik Duopeba, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to head of the Igbo community in the State (Eze Ndigbo), Chief Emmanuel Ezenwenyi, to leave the ancient city.

The ultimatum was contained in a press release by the group’s chairman, Ekpo Ekeng, vice-chairman, Adim Ekpenyong Adim, and the secretary, Ekpenyong Bassey Ekpenyong.

Their anger, according to them, was because Chief Ezenwenyi had allegedly insulted the Obong of Calabar a few weeks ago, and it was not possible for two Kings to operate in the kingdom.

Titled “Insult on Obong of Calabar by Head of Igbo people in Calabar,” the release read in part, “You have to park out of Calabar in seven days from today, April 3, 2021, for insulting the Obong of Calabar, calling yourself or making yourself the Obong of Calabar, when Obong of Calabar is on the throne.

“During the award issued on Inoson Motors on March 27, 2021, at the University of Calabar, Calabar, Inoson motors visited you, and you told him that you are the Obong of Calabar, and that there is no need or reason for him to pay a visit to the Obong of Calabar.

“For that reason, you are given seven days to pack and leave Calabar. You have to, under that seven days go to His Eminence, the Obong of Calabar, the treaty king, to his palace and apologise or pack out of Calabar.

“We cannot tolerate nor have two kings in one kingdom. Nobody can do it in your place and your people accept it. So, you cannot do it here.”

Distancing the Palace of the Obong of Calabar from the said ultimatum, Otuekong Francis Edet, media aide to the Calabar monarch, when contacted, said the Obong and his Etubom Traditional Council had not given approval to any group to issue ultimatum to anyone.

According to him, if the allegations against Eze Ndigbo are true, there are ways to handle it rather than issuing threats.

Efforts to contact the group’s leaders over the matter were not successful as at press time, neither could the embattled Eze Ndigbo be reached for comments.
