Less than 24 hours to governorship inauguration: Uncertainty as Supreme Court stops Lyon, troops take over Yenagoa

There is palpable tension in Bayelsa state hours after the Supreme Court stopped the inauguration of Chief David Lyon as governor-elect and Bishop Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo as deputy governor-elect.

Immediately the judgement was announced, our correspondent in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital witnessed wild jubilation by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters who destroyed the structures earlier set up for the inauguration of APC’s governor-elect on Friday.

PDP’s candidate Douye Diri and his supporters have continued to dine and wine in celebration together with governor Seriake Dickson whose tenure expires 12 mid-night on Thursday February 13, 2020.

A visit to the APC secretariat shows that the women are still busy sharing materials for Friday’s event.

When asked if they were not aware of the Supreme Court judgment, one of them Mrs.Ebi Peres said, “What we know is that we are swearing in governor-elect tomorrow, we don’t know any court.”

Meanwhile, Soldiers have been parading the major streets of Yenagoa, to forestall possible break down of law and order by youths and women loyal to David Lyon and the APC, who said they will conduct parallel inauguration same day.

As at the time of filling this report, commuters were stranded and some shop owners have locked up as everyone was seen rushing home for fear of the unknown.
