LG workers, govt disagree on 100% salary payment in Kogi

The special adviser to Kogi state governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Engr. Abubakar Ohere, has said the National Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) policy “does not give additional funds to the account of the local government nor take cognisance of the strength of workers in the state as against claims in some quarters.”

Ohere, who was reacting to the on-going protests in some council areas demanding for full salary payment to staff of the 21 local government areas, said “those doing so are ignorant of the realities on ground.”

According to him, since the NFIU does not know the staff strength of each local government areas in the states, there was no how the agency could have directed one hundred per cent payment to all staff of the councils.

Ohere said the protests were politically motivated, but gave the assurance that the state government would make the welfare of workers, particularly workers in the local government areas, a priority

“If the workers in the local government areas insist on 100 per cent payment when there is no money to do so, then government would have no option than to retrench workers. This is what government has been trying to avoid,” he said.
