Local govt autonomy ‘ll minimise poverty among youth- Dutse LG boss.

Chairman Dutse local government area of Jigawa state, Alhaji Bala Yakubu Yar’Gaba has said granting full autonomy to local governments will minimize drastically the abject poverty and unemployment among millions of youths roaming the streets of Nigeria.

Yar’Gaba made this suggestion on Wednesday on Radio France International [FRI] monitored in Dutse.

He said this is necessary because local governments are very close to the grassroots and provide largest votes during elections in the country.

Alhaji Ya’r Gaba also advocated that the current system of federation allocation be amended for an upward review of monthly allocations to the local governments.

He added that the current allocation was very inadequate considering the huge responsibilities they shoulder hence the need for appreciable increase.

According to Alhaji Bala, the Federation Account Allocation Committee should peg a flat rate of N300million to each of the 774 local government areas.

He also called for the set up of strong committees to monitor the activities of the councils, adding that the country would witness rapid changes and development at the grassroots levels.

The chairman pointed out that giving full autonomy to local government will serve as a relief to state governments adding that it will reduce the burden on them.
