Lockdown: Kano begins radio class for students

Kano state government has initiated a radio and television learning programmes for students to mitigate the effect of school closure triggered by COVID-19 pandemic.

The commissioner of education, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi, stated this in an interview with journalists Wednesday in Kano.

Sanusi said the was designed to avail Kano students the to learn at home.

 “The lockdown came at a time when JSS III students are preparing for their examinations, therefore, instead of remaining at home without reading, we decided to commence such programmes to serve as a revision for them,” he said.

Sanusi said the programmes would be broadcast on the state-owned radio and television station, and published on the newspaper outlets, focusing on English, Mathematics and Science subjects.

 The commissioner noted that such programmes would educate the students and keep them prepared for their examinations.

 Sanusi said the state government was considering sustaining the classroom on air during breaks and even when the pandemic might have been over.

 While commending the philanthropists who sponsored the programmes, Sanusi called on wealthy individuals to emulate the gesture for the development of education sector in the state.

 Meanwhile the executive secretary, Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Danlami Hayyu, said the board was also sponsoring similar for Primary One to Three pupils in the state.

Hayyu said the programme was being implemented in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and other development partners.

He explained that the programme tagged,“Distance Learning Education”, focuses on teaching numeracy and literacy on radio.

The executive secretary added that the programme was aimed at motivating and educating pupils from their homes to achieve continuity in classroom experiences.
