Lockdown order triggers rush for family planning in Delta

The Reproductive Health Officer in Oleh, Isoko South Local governments area of Delta state, Mrs Atedezi Afoke, has said that the lockdown order to contain the spread of Coronavirus has triggered the increase of women taking family planning services in the area. 

The Family Planning Provider told newsmen on Friday that “about 30 percent of men come for the family planning services     

According to her,”as you know we have the surge in family planning up take during the lockdown because of family closeness and intimacy during the period.

Mrs Afoke explained that the inplant method and male condom are in great demand for the family planning users. 

“Before the lockdown, we were recording about 60 women coming out monthly for the services, but during the stay-at-home, it increased a little above 100 users monthly.

She noted that a lot of women in the area have been adequately sensitised on the importance of family planning during the in reach and antinental”.   

“But, We have ran out of consumables, commodities and testing kits. We use this opportunity to call on government to provide  them and funding to keep the facility  alive. 

RHO  commended The Challenge Initiative (TCI) and other  donor agencies for their support to the facility. “We cannot deny any woman of family planning services because of unwanted pregnancy.”

Also speaking, the Facility in charge and Chief nursing Officer of Isoko North Local governments area, Mrs Mario Akpono said there was record of increase of women between 19to 46 years of age coming for the services on a monthly bases.  

The two healthcare providers said they have not recorded any case of Coronavius in their areas of operation.  

On her part, family planning user,  Mrs Oghenekome Obaro, urged Nigerian women to go for the family planning in order avoid unwanted pregnancy and risk Associated with it. 

“I was a victim of unwanted pregnancy, I becoming pregnant after nine months of child delivery which was not easy for me to manage. 

“As you can see, this is my second baby and because I had her very close , it was tough for me to manage the children and to also do other things to support the family.

“My husband is in support and he personally  brought me here at the Primary Healthcare Centre to take the Family Planning policy to stop  unplanned pregnancy.
