Lockdown: What NASS is planning to do – Senate


The leader of the Senate, Senator Abdullahi Yahaya Abubakar (APC Kebbi North), declared Sunday that the Senate will not resume plenary Tuesday this week as earlier planned.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives had penultimate Tuesday,  in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in Abuja, adjourned for 14 days to study the situation with separate resolution for resumption on Tuesday, April 7, 2020.
But President Muhamnadu  Buhari last Sunday, in a Nationwide broadcast , declared total lockdown of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states for 14 days which will end next week Monday, April 13, 2020.
In complying with the Presidential directive, the Leader of the Senate, Senator Abdullahi Yahaya  in an exclusive chat with the Blueprint , declared that the Senate shall abide with it .
“Senate shall abide by the Executive Order of Mr. President which is binding on  all, short of any National Assembly Legislation to the contrary,” he said.


As at the time both the Senate and the House of Representatives shut down for two weeks penultimate Tuesday over the COVID 19 pandemic, there were only six index cases in Abuja which has risen to 45 now.
Both Chambers may later announce Tuesday, April 21, 2020 as their resumption date since next week Tuesday will be a day after Easter Monday .
