Logo omission: Tribunal to hear petition against INEC, Senator






The Plateau state House of Assembly and National Assembly Electoral Commission, has fixed 25th June, for hearing of a petition challenging the election of Senator Istifsnus Gyang, as senator representing Plateau North senatorial district.

The United People’s Party (UPP) candidate in the election Hon Sanusi Muhammad Inuwa in a petition No EPT/PL/NA/01/2019, has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and two others, over omission of his party logo in the 2019 general elections.

In the petition, Inuwa is seeking the tribunal to determine whether he was validly nominated by his party, whether or not the 1st respondent Senator Istifanus Gyang, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was validly elected as returned by INEC, in compliance with the provisions of the electoral act.

He is also seeking for the tribunal to annul the election and order INEC to conduct fresh election which would include both the logo of the UPP and himself as participant.

At Monday’s proceedings, counsel to the petitioner, M.A. Tauwa, was at the tribunal with Sanusi Muhammad Inuwa and two other witnesses, and informed the tribunal that he would present four witnesses to close his case in one day.

Similarly, counsel to the 1st respondent Niri Darung told the tribunal that he will presents four witnesses, while the 3rd and 4th respondent counsels being PDP and INEC, IG Shanding and KL Olawoye, said they have one witnesses each to present.

The tribunal chairman Justice, T. N.Nzegwu, adjourned hearing to 25th June, adding that all parties would be allowed to presents up to 10 their witnesses.

Likewise, the tribunal has slated 4th of July, for hearing into a petitioned filed by Hon Jonathan Dabo challenging the election of Hon Haruna Maitala to represent Bassa/Jos North federal constituency.
