Low enrolment level unacceptable – NHIS boss

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Dr. Femi Thomas has said that the current enrolment profile under the Scheme is a challenge which will be tackled with maximum strength.

A press release by the Head, Media & Public Relations of NHIS, Ayo Osinlu, quoted the executive secretary as saying the current low enrolment figures has only inspired more work on the part of the Scheme, as well as other stakeholders, adding that it is clear Nigerians expect the bar of effective service delivery to be raised above present levels.

Dr. Thomas who laid out the roadmap for this objective at a Stakeholders’ Meeting,   which included State Commissioners for Health, in Abuja recently, said he “will not continue to celebrate a single digit enrolment figures, while Nigerians are yearning for and deserve better and efficient service delivery. We cannot afford to disappoint them.”

On the need to make the planned massive enrolment successful, he said contemporary information and communication technology equipment is to be deployed nationwide beginning with biometric registration, assuring that a fraud proof system would be put in place ultimately.
The NHIS Boss further charged stakeholders to redouble their efforts in the push for Universal Health Coverage, maintaining that health insurance held sufficient financial attraction to sustain investors’ unalloyed commitment to the industry.

He said: “Health Insurance is now a multi- billion naira business. Stakeholders therefore can no longer claim that receiving return on their investment would be difficult, for which reason they should work for the success of the Scheme”.
