Low voter turnout mars Plateau rerun

There is general low turnout of voters in most of the 40 polling units across the 9 local government areas in Plateau state where rerun elections are currently taking place.

However, the exercise is generally orderly and peaceful so far.

Our correspondent went round observed that INEC officials arrived early and voting commenced on time.

Meanwhile, Nigerian former Ambassador to Switzerland Alhaji Yahaya Kwande has described the ongoing rerun elections as a pity and a setback to the electoral process of Nigeria.

He said that People were made to cast their votes some two weeks ago, but for it to be cancelled and made to return to vote was very bad.

The elder statesman who once said he has quit partisan politics, made the statement shortly after casting his votes in the rerun, at polling unit 018, situated at Plateau Hotel Junction, of Jenta Adamu ward Jos North local government area of the state.

He said: “It is a pity, I felt bad. For the organisers (INEC), to be so careless as to allow things to happen and to recall us back again.”

According to Kwande, things should have been done well so that it is done once and for all; he suggested that INEC should in the future, not finish collection until everything is done.

He described the rerun as peaceful, and commended the election officials at the polling unit for a job well done.
