The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has said that the acting Chairman of the commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, was not arrested but honoured the invitation by the presidential panel reviewing the activities of the EFCC, at the Banquet Hall wing of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
A press statement by the EFCC Head, Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Monday in Abuja, said the commission’s boss was served the invitation to the panel while on his way to the Force Headquarters for a meeting.
“Magu was neither arrested nor forced to honour the invitation. A member of a legal team from the EFCC is also with him on the panel,” Oyewale said.
Earlier in the day the media had been awash with reports of the alleged arrest of the EFCC chairman by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
However, the service in a press statement by its Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, denied arresting the EFCC chairman.
The statement titled: Magu is Not Arrested” by DSS” stated, “The DSS wishes to inform the public that it did not arrest the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, as has been reported by a section of the media.
“The Service has since, today, July 6, 2020, been inundated with enquiries over the alleged arrest.”
Blueprint reports that the travails of the EFCC boss may not be unconnected with a recent letter by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to President Muhammadu Buhari on why the EFCC boss should be replaced having been rejected many times by the National Assembly.
The former Director-General of the DSS, Lawal Daura, had also written a damaging report against Magu to the Senate.
