MAGYAMCOSOL and the journey so far

The emergence of Magama Youth Awareness Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited is a pivotal one, considering the tremendous successes recorded so far within the four years of its existence.

Without doubt, Magama and its environs people dance on her tune, the reason is, prior to its existence the town was lagging in every aspect of human development ranging from unhygienic environment, poor drainage, lack of portable drinking water, inadequate market square, poor health attendants, among others.

Magama Youth Awareness Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited is unlike any other civil organizations in Nigeria as many are influenced by politicians, as such, many aren’t fully reaching out to communities. The association has less than 30 registered members and each member voluntarily pays an amount of his choice every week during meetings but to God be the glory, the kind of achievements the association brought to the community, no association has ever done that.

In her quest to reduce the number of out-of-school children, the association sponsored eight orphans for primary and secondary education. Similarly, more than eight people benefited from interest-free loan of N40,000 each from the association. The association constructed over four culverts and rehabilitated some drainages in order to avert flooding during the rainy season. Again, the association recruits graduates from time to time to embark on extra classes for students preparing to write their SSCE.

It’s the association’s tradition to donate blood, paying hospital bills for the less privileged, as well as sponsoring eight children for typhoid treatment every year. Apart from this, Magama Youth Awareness Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited embarks on environmental sanitation and decongesting of market weekly.

The interesting part is the association has a disciplinary committee charged it with punishing those with immoral behaviour in the town; the association also donates 15 vans of sand for the building of cemetery perimeter fence, and provides palliatives to less privileged during Sallah and Christmas.

The activities of association can’t be overemphasized, as such calling on all the civil society organizations in Nigeria and beyond to imbibe the spirit of MAGYAMCOSOL as doing so can help to rebuild our communities without waiting for government. Similarly, calling on the government and stakeholders to assist such associations in order reach out to communities easily since the primary responsibility of developing communities lies on the government’s shoulder.
