Maikaba, Ogunbote kick against Super 6 play-off

Two prominent Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL clubs coaches Abdul Maikaba and Gbenga Ogunbote have reacted to plans by the League Management Company to end the 2019/2020 season via “Super Six Playoff,”.
There are growing indications that a “Super 6” mini-tournament will be the vehicle of choice in resolving the 2019-20 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Maikaba is the Technical Adviser, Plateau United who currently top the log while Ogunbote is the Technical Adviser, Lobi Stars of Makurdi.

Both coaches Tuesday expressed their views on the playoff. While Maikaba stated that the playoff was disadvantageous to Plateau United, Ogunbote noted that it would be unfair to defending champions, Enyimba FC who still have many outstanding if the league was to be decided through the Super Six.

In his reaction, Plateau United coach Maikaba said ending the league with a playoff tournament is an unfair treatment to his side considering the 2018 scenario when the League was awarded to Lobi Stars.
“I don’t see a situation where the team with 49 points will be joined with the team on 39 points to play ‘playoff’ together, He said.
“It’s not even in the rule, so why not stick to the PPG rating and end the league? Why playoff? PPG should be the first option to be considered,” Maikaba lamented.

In his own reaction, Ogunbote said some clubs with fewer games played this season will see the option as cheating.
“Some teams have already played 25 games while others have played 24 and we have Enyimba who have played just 20 games because of their continental engagements.”
“Playoff will be very unfair to these teams,’ says the former Rangers boss.”

The LMC Boss, Shehu Dikko, speaking on Channels TV on Monday, said of the four options to conclude the season being considered, a play-off of the top six teams to decide the champions and continental representatives appears the most likely format to be adopted.
