A coalition of public interest and civil society groups, has called for the removal of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami SAN and Minister of Interior Affairs, Abdulraman Dambazau, following the reinstatement of former Chairman of the Presidential Pension Reforms Task Team, Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, who is yet to clear himself of the N195 billion scam alleged of him and which warranted the Economy and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to declare him wanted in 2015.
According to them, Malami and Dambazau be dismissed from office with immediate effect and be prosecuted in their roles in shielding an evidently corrupt individual.
Chairman of the Coalition, Pelumi Olajengbesi, who was speaking on behalf of the group, said it was on good authority that Danbazua approved Maina’s appointment back into the Ministry of Interior as the Director of Human Resources acting on the avowal of the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
Olajengbesi added that by same Memo by both ministers, Maina was further recommended for promotion.
According to him, both ministers cannot be said to have acted in good conscience nor within the mandate of their respective offices which demands that public interest be above all other considerations in whatever actions they undertake with the powers of their office.
“We note with alarm that as serious as this issue is it risks being swept under the carpet as with a plethora of issues concerning this government and Nigerians would soon be hoodwinked or lulled into a false sense of security or trust.
“By virtue of Section 174(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) the Attorney General shall exercise his powers as Chief Law Officer of the Nation with particular attention to public interest, interest of Justice and safety from tyranny.
“It is also our collective belief that Abubakar Malami acted in a manner capable of mortgaging our trust, confidence and faith as a people. His involvement in reinstating Mr. Maina back into the ministry as a Director is an act of betrayal and unpatrotism to the country,” he said.
