Malaria preventable, yet major challenge – Commissioner

Yobe state government has said that malaria, though a preventable disease, had remained a major public health problem in the country and constituted a major barrier to social and economic development. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, stated this during the flag off of the 2018 World Malaria Day on Tuesday in Damaturu. The commissioner, who was represented by the Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Hauwa Larai Goni Fika, said: “Over 90% of the population in Nigeria is at risk, while children and pregnant women are more vulnerable to the disease.
This calls for a sober reflection and underscores the need to use the opportunities to examine where we need to redouble our efforts at all levels.”
This year’s celebration themed ‘Ready to Beat Malaria’ with the slogan, Together We Can, was aimed at providing opportunity to celebrate successes attained in malaria control over the past years and also make a clarion call, advocacy and solicits support.” He also said the federal government’s support through the National Malaria Elimination Programmes had made tremendous impact in Yobe state by achieving remarkable targets in the implementation of various interventions.
