Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has said the involvement of traditional leader in the prevention and treatment of severe acute malnutrition is the key to addressing the cases of malnutrition in the country
The program officer of the organization Murtala Muhammed, stated this while speaking during an advocacy visit to Mai Kaltungo Enger Saleh Muhammad, Mai Tangle Dr. Abdu Buba Maisheru, and Emir of Dukku Alhaji Haruna Abdulkadir Rashid at their respective palaces during the weekend.
Muhammad said in the last few years government had engaged on malnutrition issues, yet results recorded was nothing to write home about, hence the need to engage traditional leaders who are the custodians of the society.
According to him, “the time has come for governments at all level to take ownership of the funding of malnutrition and embark on massive sensitization on the preventive measures of malnutrition.”
The Group also called for the expansion of community Management Acute Malnutrition (CMAN) site from four local government areas to other LGAs of the state.
Muhammad explained that CMAN is the best solution for the treatment of severe acute malnourished children: “It cannot be treated with ordinary food but need on a holistic approach”.
The program Officer also reveals that the federal government has released N1 billion for treatment of malnourished children, adding that the amount is not enough for the treatment of reported cases across the country.
In their separate responses, the Mai Kaltungo called for proactive measures to address the problem, While Mai Tangale stressed the need for more enlightenment on prevention and how to eat a well-balanced meal using the available crops.
