Man, 20, docked for possessing 500g of marijuana

A 20-year-old man, Olarewaju Oderinde, was Thursday arraigned before a Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, for allegedly being in possession of 500 grammes of Indian hemp (cannabis sativa).

The prosecutor, Mrs Beatrice Igbaraese of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 10 at Ikare Motor Park, Ado-Ekiti.

“Olarewaju Oderinde, m, 20, on or about January 10, 2020, at Ikare Motor Park, Ado-Ekiti, without lawful authority dealt in 500 grammes of Indian hemp otherwise known as cannabis sativa,” she said.

The prosecutor said the substance was a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin and LSD.

She said the offence contravenes Section 11c of the NDLEA Cap. No 30 Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Igbaraese, who did not oppose the bail application by the defence counsel, prayed the court for an adjournment for her to prepare further for the case.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge leveled against him.

The defence counsel, Mr Olatunde Olayemi, prayed the court grant his client bail.

Justice Uchena Agomoh, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

Agomoh added that the surety must be a civil servant on salary grade level 10 and above, sign an undertaking and present two full photographs and two passport photographs.

The judge adjourned the case until March 26 for trial.(NAN)
