Man, 30, reminded for killing 85-year-old old woman in Ebonyi

One Mr Bernard Oyibe, a 30- year-old man has been reminded in Nigerian Correctional Center for allegedly killing 85-year-old woman, Grace Nwokwo, in Abakaliki Ebonyi state.

In the Magistrate’s Court sitting in Abakaliki on Tuesday, the suspect was said to have  allegedly killed Mrs Nwokwo with cutlass on 13 September, 2019, at Nubia Ezza Inyimagu community, in the Izzi Local Government Area of the state.

He was arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court on one count charge bothering on murder.

According to  Barr Eze, the Police Prosecutor,  the offence was punishable under section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi state, 2009.

However the Defense Counsel, P.N. Mbam, applied to the court to bail his client’s on admittance.

But the police prosecuting Counsel, Barr Mathias, opposed the bail application.

The Chief Magistrate, Nnenna Onuoha, said the Court had no jurisdiction to grant bail, in such cases.

She directed that the suspect be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, while his file should be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state for necessary action.

The matter was adjourned till December 13, 2019, for report of compliance.
