Man bags 19 months for assaulting cop in Zuba

A man, Ismaila Musa, was at weekend sentenced to 19 months in prison by a Zuba Upper Area Court for beating up a police officer.
The accused who is facing four-count charge of screening an offender, obstructing a police officer from carrying out his work, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

The presiding judge, Malam Aminu Sa’ad, however, gave the accused an option to pay N75,000 fine.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Haruna Danlami, had earlier told the court that on April 2, a police officer who was sent to Zuba fruit market, Abuja, on inquiry, on getting to the market arrested two suspects, along with the exhibit of their offence, and charged them with theft.
The defendant was said to have attacked the police man and set the other suspect free in the process and escaped with the exhibit on their way back to the station.

Danlami also told the court that Musa deceived one Cpl. Yonana Moses to come and arrest a suspect that escaped from his custody.
He said that on reaching there, the convict, along with some boys, beat up the officer.
In another development, the same court sentenced Godwin Samuel and Tyowase Denis, both of fruit market, Zuba, to five months in prison for stealing oranges, a phone and N1, 000.

Sa’ad, who delivered the judgment after Samuel and Denis pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of theft gave the convicts an option of N20, 000 fine each.
Danlami said on April 8, the convicts went to the market and stole the items, during police investigation, a bag of oranges and the stolen phone were found in their possession.
