Man in trouble for ‘defrauding’ admission seekers in Osun


A 34-year-old man, Oguntayo Paul, was on Monday remanded by the Magistrate court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State capital, for allegedly defrauding admission seekers to the tune of N585,000.


The accused person was said to have committed the offence sometimes in October 2019 at Testing Ground Area, Osogbo.


Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, told the court that the accused person did fraudulently and unlawfully obtain the sum of N295,000 from one Pastor Olaniyi Oladipupo  with pretence of securing admission into School of Nursing Osogbo for his daughter, Esther Oladipupo, and failed to do so. 


The accused was also alleged to have collected N290,000 from one Abiola Adeniran with pretence of securing admission into School of Nursing Osogbo for his daughter, Janet Adeniran, and also failed to do so. 

The alleged crime, according to the charge sheet, contravened the provision of sections 419 and 380, and punishable under section 390(9) of the  Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol ll Law of Osun state, 2002. 


However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the four count charges bothering on fraud and stealing, preferred against him.


Counsel to the accused, Mr. D. B. Alakiti, urged the court to admit his client to bail pending the determination of the case. 


But, the prosecution opposed the bail application made by the counsel, noting that the accused had abused the administrative bail of the police by running away since December 2019 that he was asked to report back to the police. 


Magistrate Modupe Awodele thereby ordered the remand of the accused person in Ilesa correctional facility and adjourned the matter till January 18, 2021 for hearing.
