The decision of National Universities Commission (NUC) to split Mass Communication into seven departments has offered students specialization in the study of the course.
The head of the department of Mass Communication at Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK), Dr Josiah Sambo Kente, said the NUC decision was a welcome development.
The former Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, disclosed that unbundling of Mass Communication will give students the opportunity to be more specific on what they are studying, “as such they’re going to specialise on different apects of journalism.”
He expressed satisfaction on the process of restructuring the curriculum. According to him, he has been part and parcel of the dream that has now came to reality.
The don further stressed that the decision would also pave way to train more people in specialised journalism.
Kente reiterated that the society would also benefit from this gesture as it would be another step for in-depth and comprehensive journalism practice.
However, he said that Nasarawa state university would begin with four departments out of the seventh separated courses as directed by the institution’s management.
kente narrated how the Mass communication was unable to produce specialists but rather allow students them undergo general training of the course.
He expressed worries for lack of personnel which may cause the delay of running the seven departments.
“Because of inadequate manpower, we shall commence with four departments as the management have given us the go ahead” he said.
