Jigawa state Governor, Dr Sule Lamido, said based on Section 2121 of the 1999 Constitution he has released 14 prisoners who were serving various jail terms across the state.
The Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Yakubu Abdullahi Ruba, said the governor was empowered by Section 1221 of the constitution to release whoever he wanted to, no matter the gravity of the offence.
The commissioner, who had addressed journalists yesterday, said 10 of the released convicts were charged on various offences included homicide, theft and witchcraft, respectively.

He added that the other four were convicted to life in imprisonment by hanging because they were charged for armed robbery cases in which they had already served up to 10 years in prison.
He said amongst them there was no female because out of the 800 convicted prisoners, only four were females whose cases were still pending in various courts.
