Medical scientists urge Buhari to appoint professionals as minister

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to put an end to what they termed the “perceived bias” in the appointment of health ministers by appointing other members of the health care profession as minister of health.

The AMLSN made the call during its 199th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held weekend in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

AMLSN said other members of the medical profession should also be given the opportunity to serve as the minister of health and prove themselves as good candidates.

Addressing journalists at a press conference after the meeting, the National Publicity Secretary, Dr Casmir Ifeanyi stated that appointing other members of the health care profession other than a medical doctor as the minister of health “will in no small measure help the president deliver on the much needed improved healthcare and health system for the Nigerian people.”

Ifeanyi expressed the opinion that a medical laboratory scientist should be considered as the minister of health, saying, “We are convinced that the medical laboratory science profession is loaded with ample qualified people who can help President Buhari reposition the Nigerian health sector.”

He condemned the practice by some medical doctors of abdicating their primary duties and instead performing the duties of medical laboratory scientists.

Ifeanyi described the situation whereby medical doctors and science laboratory technologists are performing the duties of the medical laboratory scientists as an “aberration and classic quackery” in health institutions which according to him was putting the lives of patients and Nigerians in jeopardy.
