When you think of a DJ, what comes to your mind? An aggressive, rugged, hip hop-style-dressed, turntable-scratching, guy right? But the game is changing in Nigeria just like in the rest of the world, with the recent influx of females in the otherwise patrichichal DJ. While you may suppose female DJs would be some hard-looking females behind the deck as many of their male counterparts, these new collection of ladies who make a living from entertaining with music on the wheel of steel are anything but rugged. They are not only soft and tender, they are beautiful, sexy, and have been proven to have skills to give their male counterparts a run for their money. Guess what? some of them are even highly educated with backgrounds in the corporate world. In fact, some of them have got resume that will intimate even most Nigerians with white collar jobs. 1. DJ Cuppy
Real name Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, many have wondered what DJ Cuppy, the stunning daughter of Nigerian Oil billionaire, Femi Otedola wants in such a profession as DJing when she could have easily leaned on one of her dad’s blue chip companies. However, her maverick approach to DJing alone would force you to accept that the art of DJing, for her, is as serious as oil business. A graduate of Business and Economics from Kings College London, Cuppy recently bagged a Master’s degree in Music Business from the New York University,USA.
She has performed at the 2nd Oil Barons charity in Dubai, the Financial Times of Mexico Luxury Summit 2014, President Mohammadu Buhari’s Inauguration, resident DJ at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2014, Tatler and Christie’s Art Ball in London,and many other high-profile, events and many more. Currently an intern at Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, in April 2014, DJ Cuppy was appointed by the then Nigeria’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Edem Duke, as the tourism ambassador for the country’s “Fascinating Nigeria” campaign. 2. DJ Bellcheque
She was the official DJ at the much-publicised wedding of Benjamin Omesiete, Flavour’s manager. A consultant by day, and a DJ by night; DJ Bellcheque has been on a roll recently. Most people may never see the face behind the personality owing to are mask-wearing identity, but they sure can see her bod which is as banging as the music she plays when she spin the wheel. Some birds in the know about her whispered that she cuts her teeth in the corporate world before delving into entertainment. DJ Bellcheque is a protégé of Mavins official DJ, DJ Big N and has also recently delved into music production. She plays at only exclusive high-profile private parties and rarely make club appearances. Self-acclaimed “Nigeria’s Sexiest DJ”, Los Angeles based DJ Rosie is a native of Lagos and pulls down the roof when she comes to Nigeria. DJ Rosie’s ability to manoeuvre the decks in between different genres such as Hip-hop, Pop and Electro puts her in a class of her own asides her signature helmet-wearing behind the deck. Wait for this, DJ Rosie is also a Master chef and psychologist! She would also probably be a psychologist behind the wheel of steel!
4. DJ Lambo
She may come across to you as tomboyish, but DJ Lambo has managed to still stay pretty. Signed to Loopy Music, despite being in a male dominated profession, Dj Lambo whose real name is Olawunmi Okerayi, gets a top share of some the high profile gigs in town. Lambo who is the official DJ for Rapper MI started out her career as an OAP in Ray Power 100.5FM and then moved on to Rhthym 94.7 FM, also to Love 104.5 FM in Abuja before starting off with DJing which she taught herself.
5. DJ Frizzie
River state born Frances Higgwe aka DJ Frizzie is the official DJ for Nigerian Dancehall singer, Mr. 2kay. A graduate of Environmental Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt. She also has a Masters in Water & Environmental Management in the UK. DJ Frizzie is half-sister to “Cure My Craze” crooner Frank D’Nero.
6. DJ Soupamodel
She was in the month of June selected as governor of The Grammys Recording Academy, Washington DC chapter, Aderonke Ariyo aka DJ Soupamodel is Nigerian-American DJ who also doubles as the official DJ for US singer, T-pain. Being so good at what she does, coupled with her association with T-Pain has afforded her the opportunity to work with International acts like Wyclef, Jason Derulo, Mims, Soulja Boy, Nappyboy to list a few. Locally she teamed with Tolu of Project Fame to produce a love song tagged “Arewa”, she has also done musical works featuring Wizkid, Vector among other local acts.
7. DJ Switch
Obianuju Catherine Udeh (DJ Switch) had been operating underground until she attained a Pop star status after winning the first edition of X-FACTOR Africa. Her new exposure immediately position her as to rub shoulders with the best in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
8. DJ Mystelle
DJ Mystelle is a protégé of highly revered Nigerian turn-tablist DJ Humility. DJ Mystelle has done collaboration with acts like MI and Yemi Sax.
Some of her high profile gigs include DJing at Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘The Presidency And The Entertainment Industry Dinner at Eko Hotel and Suites, DJing for the yearly edition of “Girlfriend’s night out” hosted by Mrs Anne Murray Bruce etc. Her real name is Bimbo Idowu.
9. DJ Toxiq
Born Oribhabor Ann Amen, the self-tagged Africa pioneering DJ/Producer produced “Oruka”, one of the crossover Hip-hop tracks of Fuji music icon, Pasuma. Sexy DJ Toxiq is not only a DJ and producer, she is equally an artiste and has released quite a number of singles which can be found out there.
10. DJ Nana
Her real name is Nanayat Abedoh. DJ Nana was the winner of the “Airtel/Barcaddi Cool FM” DJ Competition where she battled it out with many of her male counterparts, and then went on to train under Nigerian legendary Disc Jockey, Jimmy Jatt Inc with DJ Jimmy Jatt. She, not long ago, collaborated on an inspirational song titled “Know” with Omawumi.
