Members’ arrest: NBA condemns Police ‘unlawful’ act

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Kano Branch, has strongly condemned what it described as  unprofessional act of the Police for allegedly molesting, arresting and detaining two of its colleagues, who carried out their lawful duties at the secretariat.

In a press statement in Kano, the NBA also called on the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Wakili Mohammed, to be non-partisan and professional in the discharge of his official duties.

The association further stated that his action and that of his men was against the rule of law and oath of office.

The statement reads in part;  “Yesterday, Tuesday 19th, March, 2019, at around 2300hrs, heavily armed Police men, numbering about 30 in 6 Hilux Police Van, alongside a political party member, wearing red cap and some press men stormed an election petition secretariat here in Kano, where our colleagues are working in preparation of election petition, molested, arrested and took them away with their working document, computer system and other working equipment to the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Bompai, Kano, where they were put in cell and spent the whole night.

“All explanations made by the lawyers on their status and what they were doing with sufficient proof of request of results sent to INEC and certified true copy obtained thereof fell on deaf ears.

“We demand an immediate public apology to the NBA for attacking and maltreating our members while on their lawful duties within 48 hours of this press release,” the statement said.
