Members want court to stop A/Ibom NULGE week

Some aggrieved members of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Akwa Ibom state chapter have sought court order to restrain the organisation from organising its week.

The members stated that the interim injunction became necessary due to an alleged arbitrary exercise of power by the current executive members of the organisation.

In a motion ex parte marked NICN/UYI/2019, the plaintiffs said the defendants exhausted their four-year tenure on 25th November, 2018 and 16th October, 2018 respectively, but refused to conduct fresh elections contrary to the constitution of NULGE.

The respondents in the suit include: NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel, Comrade Martins Usen Effiong and Comrade Anestina Jeremiah Iweh.

The plaintiffs stated that by allowing the defendants to continue with the running of the organisation would amount to “further plundering the funds of the union.”

The suit reads inter alia: “The claimants / applicants are members of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE}. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants and the executive committees that they lead were elected into the state executive committees on 25/11/14 and national executive committees of NULGE on 16/10/2014.

“By the constitution of NULGE made in 2005 and revised in 2006, their tenure of office was four years. By virtue of the foregoing, the tenure of office of the 2nd defendant expired by the efflux ion of time on 25th November, 2018 and that of the 3rd and 4th defendants on 16th October, 2018 respectively.”
