Memphis Depay scores first Barcelona goal in friendly win over Girona

Barcelona overcame Girona 3-1 in a pre-season friendly at the Estati Johan Cruyff, with Memphis Depay coming on as a substitute and scoring the final goal from the penalty spot.

It was a game of three penalties, with Gerard Pique and Samu Saiz both scoring first half spot kicks either side of Rey Manaj’s latest pre-season strike.
The first big chance was for Girona, as Cristhian Stuani spun around Gerard Pique and provoked a save, before Alejandro Balde made a great block on the rebound.

Pique had a more enjoyable moment 10 minutes later as he was able to score the opener from the penalty spot, even though his effort was initially saved and then turned in by the unfortunate hand of Juan Carlos.
The goalkeeper had more bad luck just a few minutes later, as a Rey Manaj shot bounced in off the Girona No.1’s legs.

Barcelona could have added another before the break, but Sergi Roberto turned the ball into the net after receiving it from an offside position and they instead conceded just before half time to a dinked Samu Saiz penalty.
Memphis then came on straight away, with his first Barcelona touch being the resulting kick off. Already he produced one piece of skill to put in a cross before half time, before the Dutchman provoked a good save from Juan Carlos shortly after the restart and another block.

After the Blaugrana made eight substitutions at once on the hour mark, Miralem Pjanic struck the crossbar with a freekick and Antoine Griezmann impressed inside the area. The Frenchman even won a late penalty, which Memphis took and scored from to bag his first goal in Barcelona colours and to round off the 3-1 victory.
