Mercy Corps, INGOs advocate regular hand washing for schools in Yobe

As part of the activities to commemorates the 2022 global hand washing day in Yobe state, a Non Governmental Organisations, Mercy Corps in collaboration with other international organisations such as, US AID, WaterAid, Translators without borders, Care International, International Rescue Committee Taimako and Hope Interective unveiled awareness on hand washing techniques at Njiwaji primary school in Damaturu.

Speaking at the event, the State Wash Coordinator representing INGOs for water sanitation and hygiene, Solomon Nuhu, said they want to pass the message to children, communities, schools and as people interact with one another, they will understand the need for them to really wash their hands.

He stated that this year’s theme: “Unit for universal hygiene,” was to bring all stakeholders, government, private sectors, schools and community leaders to make sure people understand the need to wash their hands.

“Hand washing is something that is very critical.we can free our selves from diseases through washing our hands regularly especially at critical time”, he said.

In his remarks, the state Commissioner of Water Resources, Alkali Abdulkadir Jajere, said regular hand wash has economic benefits as it helps reduce the outbreak of diseases.

Represented by Garba Ubalio,Jajere noted that regular hand wash is a major means of reducing the transmission of diseases.

The Commissioner called on the government to give more emphasis on enlightenment and proper campaign to enlighten the public especially the schools because the young children the agent of change when you teach them young,they would carry on and teach others.

Highlight of the occasion was a song and drama on hand washing, demonstration of effective hand washing,quiz by school pupils and effective group hand washing using the tippy tap respectively.
